Preview - National Seniors Strokeplay 2025
Senior Gents preview by John Manning
Richard Jordan (Raffeen Creek) will defend his National Over-55 Senior grade Strokeplay championship title in an elite field of 32 at Riverdale on Sunday.
Jordan will tee-off in the final group of the day alongside 2024 third place finisher Chris Scannell (Collins) and 2015 National Intermediate Strokeplay champion Damian Creevey (Lucan).
Two former champions return in another bid for glory and they are drawn together. 2019 kingpin at E.S.B., Patrick Farrell (Bruff) partners Lucan’s Anthony Malone who was successful at Erry in 2013, at Old County in 2015 and at Glenville two years ago. That 13:18 threeball is completed by Michael Ahern (Lucan), the 2016 Leinster Intermediate Strokeplay champion at Collinstown.
Patsy Reamsbottom (Ferbane) was second (after a play-off) to Anthony Malone at Erry in 2013 and two other former runners-up participating are Pacelli Darcy (Ardnacrusha) and Frank O’Donoghue (Raffeen Creek).
O’Donoghue is a former two-time National Strokeplay champion while Darcy was the 2015 European Senior Strokeplay champion at Orvelte.
Three-time All Ireland Matchplay champion Sean Harkins (Ryston) and Tadgh Harrington (Rathfeigh) were third place finishers in 2018 and 2022 respectively.
Weeshie Murphy (Raffeen Creek) was intermediate winner at St. Stephen’s last year, having previously won that grade at Collins in 2012. Another former intermediate victor now playing senior is Anthony Carroll (Royal Meath). He claimed inter honours at Old County in 2015.
Two players with impressive recent National Matchplay form are paired together. 2022 All-Ireland Matchplay champion Barry Morrissey (Crosshaven) plays with his 2024 National Intermediate Matchplay counterpart John Looney (Collins).
Three others with significant national event pedigree are 1997 National Mixed Team Event winner Richard O’Flaherty (Raffeen Creek), former Inter-County and Mixed Foursomes champ Dennis Monaghan (Shandon) and Mixed and non-Mixed Scotch Foursomes specialist John Fitzgerald (Hillview).
Two weeks out from the European Team championship, Irish international team manager Paddy Kelly (Trim) will take some time out from the preparations to contend here.
Best of Luck to all and thanks again to John Manning
