Preview - National Seniors Strokeplay 2025
Intermediate Gents preview by John Manning
Holder Weeshie Murphy has moved on to pastures new but the cast of the 2025 intermediate renewal at Riverdale will feature four former champions.
Weeshie’s Raffeen Creek clubmate John Tett claimed the 2019 title at E.S.B.
Riverdale’s own Sean Minogue was crowned the 2018 champion at McDonagh, having been runner-up the previous year at Cloghogue. Ronan Hollywood won that 2017 championship on home turf, still the only player to lift the trophy over his home course, which will be added incentive for Minogue and his clubmates, Paul Shoer Senior, James McGrath and Patsy Farrell.
Kilbeggan’s John Carton was a four-stroke victor at Erry in the 2013 championship.
Stephen Knight (Royal Meath) was Nett winner in the 2020 National Intermediate Strokeplay championship. Ian Leech (St. Anne’s) claimed third place in that championship at RGSC in 2012.
Four players who shared in Inter-County glory in the last century are notable contenders on the list for Riverdale – Collinstown’s Feichin Morgan (who won with Westmeath in 1978), Larkspur Park’s Michael McGrath (Tipperary 1993, 1995), Royal Meath’s Dermot McGregor (Meath, 1996, 1998) and Loughlinstown’s Paddy Kelly (Dublin, 1982). Kelly won The All-Ireland Over-55 Strokeplay championship at senior grade level in 2012. Morgan and McGrath play together with John Tett, in what should be a compelling threeball to watch.
A trio recent bronze medallists will also tee it up at Riverdale - Dermot Heffernan (Lucan) was third at Glenville in 2023, John Kennedy (McDonagh) a year earlier at Bellewstown and Anthony Maher (Lakeside) at McDonagh in 2018.
Eddie Hogan (St. Stephen’s) was the 2009 Cork Strokeplay champion and the 2019 County Matchplay runner-up.
Former Kildare Matchplay champion Martin Delaney (Athgarvan) is in the field as is Eddie Hockey (Killineer), who took the bronze medal in the 2022 Leinster Strokeplay championship.
2024 Leinster Matchplay semi-finalist Gel Martin (Killineer) was provincial Strokeplay champion away back in 1988.
Best of Luck to all and thanks as always to John Manning
