National Scotch Foursomes stats review

By John Manning

Eileen McCarthy (Deerpark) and Darren Goodall (Tralee) are the second Co. Kerry pairing in history to win the National Mixed Foursomes (now the National Mixed Scotch Foursomes) following the Deerpark combination Mary Murphy & Damien Fleming’ victory in 2013 at Lakewood.

Eileen and Darren are the fourth split club couple win the National Mixed Foursomes (now the National Mixed Scotch Foursomes). That feat was also achieved by Ian Farrelly (Duleek) & Catherine McCreevy (Navan), Catherine McCreevy (Navan) & William Sheridan (Bellewstown) and Paula Lynch (Oldcastle) & Kevin Carolan (Rathfeigh).

For the first time, the winning two-club combination hailed from a county other than Meath.

Darren Goodall joins Padraic Sarsfield, Wally Sheridan, Damien Fleming, Chris Scannell, Ian Farrelly, Noel Joyce, Jack McCormack and Sean Harkins as National Mixed Foursomes winners to have also won National Inter-County silver medals with their respective counties.

The winning margin in the National Mixed Foursomes was one stroke for the 25th time in history.

For the fourth time ever, the winning score was exactly the same as the previous year’s successful tally.

Brian Cahill & Mark Cahill became the second pair from Co. Tipperary to win the National Non-Mixed Scotch Foursomes.

2009 Munster and National Junior Strokeplay champion Brian Cahill & Mark Cahill are the first set of brothers to claim the title. They also formed the first two-club partnership to win the National Non-Mixed Scotch Foursomes.

For the first time two-club partnerships won the two National Scotch Foursomes tournaments (Mixed and Non-Mixed) in the same year.

Brian and Mark’s winning margin of five strokes is the biggest to date in the short history of the event.

Lakeside hosted a National Mixed Foursomes final for the third time.

Margaret Hennessy and Sean Minogue secured a third runners-up slot in the history of the National Mixed Foursomes for the Riverdale club. Margaret and Dean Courtney were second twice.

Margaret and Sean are the sixth partnership from Tipperary to be runners-up in the National Mixed Foursomes. Five of those six second places have materialised in the last ten years.

Sean Minogue is the second National Over-55s Intermediate grade Strokeplay champion (after John Carton) to be a National Mixed Foursomes runner-up.

Margaret Hennessy joins Mairead O’Toole, Sarah O’Neill, Elaine Hannon, Jessie McKeown and Angela Roche as National Intermediate Strokeplay champions to also be a National Mixed Foursomes runner-up.

Lauren Pyke, Sarah O’Neill and Elaine Hannon are the other National Junior Strokeplay champions along with Margaret Hennessy to be runner-up in the National Mixed Foursomes.

Sean McCormack & Davy Morrissey are the first pairing from the Lakeside club and the second from Co. Tipperary to be runners-up in the National Non-Mixed Scotch Foursomes.

Sean is equally adept at Mixed Foursomes, having been a session prize winner with Mary Quinn at Tralee earlier this year.

Sean and Davy have been picking-up prizes together for a long time – they were both part of the Our Lady’s Templemore Munster Schools runners-up side in 2002.

Sean and Davy’s 94 points’ return is the lowest to clinch second place in the National Non-Mixed Scotch Foursomes since the tournament’s inception in 2019.

For the second time in three stagings, the same county provided the winners and the runners-up of the Non Mixed Scotch Foursomes (Tipperary in 2022 and 2024).

For the second time in three stagings, the same county provided the runners-up of both the National Mixed and National Non Mixed Scotch Foursomes (Tipperary in 2022 and 2024).

Margaret Hogan & Darren O’Connell claimed Best Gross at the National Mixed Foursomes for the second time and became the eleventh multiple Best Gross winners.

The fourteen year period (2010 – 2024) between the Tullamore twosome’s Best Gross victories ties the record for the longest gap between first and most recent Best Gross performance – Ger Ward and Christy McDermott (1986 – 2000).

Margaret Hogan now has two Best Gross wins and a runners-up prize (with the late Vincent Murphy in 1985).

Margaret and Darren are the second couple (after Chrissie Sheedy & Darren Keogh) to win the Best Gross in both the original v. Par and current Stableford formats. They scored eight under par in 2010 at R.G.S.C. and at Lakeside.

Frank Dineen and John Walsh are the second pairing (after Kieran Earls & Tommy Hanley) to win Best Gross at both the Munster Non-Mixed Scotch Foursomes and the National Non-Mixed Scotch Foursomes in the same year.

Frank and John formed the first two-club partnership to claim National Non-Mixed Scotch Foursomes Best Gross.

Ann O’Callaghan & Barry Morrissey are the first Bishopstown pairing and the first from Co. Cork to win the first session prize at the National Mixed Foursomes. Cork partnerships previously secured second session laurels in 2019 (Mary & John Murray) and in 2022 (Gillian Morrissey & Dylan Ahern).

Bernadette and Jason O’Regan are the second Co. Kerry pair (after Lisa O’Connor & Tony Blake) to claim a session prize in the National Mixed Foursomes.

2018 National Over-55s intermediate grade Strokeplay bronze medallist Anthony Maher & Thomas Roberts continued a great day for Lakeside and Tipperary by capturing 1st Session honours.

It was a third podium Scotch Foursomes finish in three years for Thomas who won a Munster Session Prize with Bridget Shelley at Bruff in 2023 after linking with Josephine Tobin to top the first Session nationally at Larkspur Park in 2022.

A National Mixed Team Event runner-up with Lakeside in 2016, Anthony has also been a session prize winner in the National Scramble (2014) and the Munster Mixed Foursomes (2018).

2008 National Junior Strokeplay champion Davy Hallinan & recent Fermoy Intermediate Scratch Cup runner-up Alan Sutcliffe emulate Hillview club colleagues Adrian Anglim & Joe Hickey (2019) in picking-up Best 2nd Session laurels in the National Non-Mixed Scotch Foursomes.
