Mairead Manning RIP
It is a source of great sadness to learn that Mairead Manning (St. Stephen’s) has passed away after a long and brave battle with illness. May she rest in peace.
A top-class player, Mairead claimed no fewer than three All Ireland titles and a string of other awards.
Mairead produced an ultra-impressive performance in the 2016 National Ladies Junior Strokeplay Championship at St. Stephen's. Eight strokes clear heading into the final round after successive scores of 57, Mairead posted 63 for the final eighteen to maintain an eight stroke winning advantage.
After finishing third at Cement in the 2017 National Ladies Intermediate Strokeplay Championship, Mairead became the fifth player in history to win both the National Ladies Junior and Intermediate Strokeplay Championships when her 112 aggregate at Collins saw her capture the 2018 All Ireland intermediate title by one shot from local player Vera McCarthy.
Mairead and St. Stephen’s clubmate Dave Towler won the 2018 National Mixed Foursomes at Lakeside with a superb return of +15, which was a stroke better than runners-up Margaret Courtney & Dean Courtney (Riverdale).
Mairead and Dave went close to adding the 2019 Munster Scotch Foursomes at St. Stephen's when their 86 points tally gave them second spot, two behind winners Nicola Ahern and Morty Ahern (Collins).
Mairead was crowned Cork Matchplay Champion at Rocklodge in 2017 and at St. Stephen’s in 2022. 2024 Cork Ladies Intermediate Matchplay finalist, she was runner-up in the 2020 Cork Ladies’ Intermediate Strokeplay Championship at Fermoy and in the 2023 Cork Ladies’ Intermediate Strokeplay Championship at Ballinlough.
In the 2014 Munster Ladies Junior Inter-County Championship at St. Stephen’s, Mairead joined Karen Aherne, Noreen Ryan, Jill O'Riordan, Maureen O'Connor and Geraldine Hanrahan in a Cork team that posted 629 to finish runners-up behind Tipperary.
In the 2015 Munster Ladies Junior Inter-County Championship at Lakewood, Cork juniors (Karen Aherne, Ann Ryan, Jill O'Riordan linking with Mairead) scored 206 Stableford points to again finish runners-up, two strokes behind Tipperary.
Mairead featured on the Cork team that also included Karen Aherne, Noreen Ryan and Jill O'Riordan, which scored 200 to finish second to Waterford in the 2016 Munster Ladies Junior Inter-County Championship at Tramore.
The Munster Ladies Intermediate Inter-County Championship at Castleisland in 2017 resulted in a triumph for the Cork quartet of Mairead, Patsy O'Donovan, Sarah O'Neill and Ailish Sexton. The Leesiders’ 199 points return was five better than runners-up Tipperary.
Cork Intermediates (Mairead joining Vera McCarthy, Sarah O'Neill and Ailish Sexton) scored 235 stableford points to take Best Nett in the 2018 Munster Inter-County Championships at Parteen.
Mairead marshalled a Cork intermediate team, also including Mary Ann Byrne, Sarah O'Neill and Ailish Sexton, to 250 stableford points and 2nd Nett place behind Tipperary in the 2019 Munster Inter-County Championship at Hillview.
In the 2015 Munster Ladies Junior Strokeplay Championship at Fermoy, Mairead fired 123 to claim the title by a single stroke from Lily O'Brien (Lakeside) before finishing second in the 2016 Munster Ladies Junior Strokeplay Championship at Hillview. She had also been runner-up at Ballinlough in 2014.
Mairead won the 2018 Munster Intermediate Matchplay Championship (at Fermoy), a title she regained four years later at Bishopstown.
A keen supporter of all Pitch and Putt tournaments, Mairead linked with Hillview players Lorraine Creed and Evelyn Cahill to win the 2019 Munster Ladies Social Competition at Hillview on 81.
Mairead was totally dedicated to the St. Stephen’s club where her father Jim is a prominent member (and former Club Captain). Mairead was a Presidents’ Prize winner at the club, which she served administratively in roles such as Secretary, Competitions Secretary and Lady Captain.
Sincere sympathy is extended to Jim, Mairead’s wider family and friends and to the St. Stephen’s club.
Thank you to John Manning for this special tribute to Mairead.
