Chris O Shaughnessy
R.I.P
Sincere sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Chris O’Shaughnessy RIP.
Stalwart Inter-County player Chris O’Shaughnessy was honoured with the 2004 Pitch and Putt Ireland Hall of Fame Award. Chris played Pitch and Putt for upwards of five decades. She shot 100 at Tullamore in 1989 to win the Irish Ladies Strokeplay championship by three from Marie Mahony (R.G.S.C.). A year later, she lost a play-off to Gail McDermott (Portmarnock) for the title, after a tie on 101 at Crosshaven.
Munster Strokeplay champion at Dunlops in 1984 (scoring 102 to 105 for clubmate Marie Allen), Chris was four times a Munster Inter-County winner with Cork (in 1984 at Tralee, in 2002 at Bruff, in 2006 at Lakeside and in 2008 at Clare Road)
Bill O’Brien and Chris reached the 1989 Cork Mixed Foursomes final at Rocklodge. Chris and Bill linked-up again to be Cork Mixed Foursomes winners at Collins in 1998.
Chris overcame Mary Daly (St. Stephen’s) in the 2000 Cork Matchplay final at Rocklodge while she beat Linda Murphy (Collins) in the 2002 decider at Inniscarra.
Crosshaven hosted Chris’ play-off win over Mary Daly (St. Stephen’s) in the 1995 Cork Strokeplay championship after the pair had both scored 107. She won again at St. Anne’s in 2001, firing 104 to triumph by two from Lakewood’s Lily Carroll.
National Over-55s Senior Strokeplay victor at Deerpark in 2006, Chris beat Rose Kelly of Ryston in extra holes after a tie on 110. In the Cork Seniors’ Strokeplay Championships, at Fermoy in 2006, Chris scored 105 to earn a two stroke winning margin over Patsy O'Donovan (Collins).
Lady Captain of St. Anne’s as recently as 2015, Chris loyally supported all Pitch and Putt competitions, playing and competing at all times in an innate sporting fashion, mirroring the success in another code of her brother Tony, who collected three All-Ireland hurling medals with Cork in the 1950s.
National Inter-County glory eluded Chris but she was second with Cork in 2007 at Lakewood having figured on the third-placed Leeside quintet in 2004 at Glenville.
Munster Strokeplay runner-up at Hillview in 1986, shooting 101 to Hillview’s Eleanor Kavanagh’s 96, Chris also contested a play-off for the championship in April 2000 before eventually finishing third at Lakewood.
A member of the all-conquering St. Anne’s team that won the Cork ladies Senior League eight times in a row from 1978 to 1985, Chris enjoyed many other career highlights. She captured Best Gross in the National Mixed Foursomes of 1997 alongside Bill O’Brien at I.G.B. while she took Gross laurels with St. Anne’s in the four-person Munster Mixed Team Event in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003.
Chris also claimed Cork league winners’ medals in 1976, 1987 and 1994.
Chris’ loss is mourned at St. Anne’s Pitch and Putt club and throughout the Pitch and Putt community. May she rest in peace.
