2025 Gents National Strokeplay Stats

2025 Gents National Strokeplay Stats by John Manning
Damien Fleming's penchant for the National Strokeplay championship continues. The 2018 champion moves on to two titles, which puts the Deerpark man on a par with Frank O'Donoghue, John Crowley, Gus Carolan, Anthony Malone and John Walsh. Only Ray Murphy, Kevin Rogers, Sean Downes and Liam O’Donovan have won more.
Damien's current haul of five National individual titles (two Strokeplay and three Matchplay) sees him climb level with John Walsh and Sean Downes, joint second only to Ray Murphy on the all-time list.
Damien Fleming's liking for two-day tournaments was apparent again. His three Irish Open wins were also achieved in two-day events.
Damien Fleming now boasts seven National Strokeplay podium finishes. Ray Murphy has eight. John Walsh has nine.
Damien Fleming won by four, the most comprehensive victory margin of the five St. Anne’s National Senior Strokeplay championships.
Fleming has now finished in the top six of the National Gents Strokeplay championship on eleven occasions. He joins Ray Murphy (2007) as players who have won the European championship with Ireland and the National Strokeplay championship in the same season.
John Walsh finished second in the National Gents Strokeplay championship for the fifth time, extending his own record at the top of that particular list.
Jason Cregan is the second Tralee player to claim a bronze medal in the National Gent’s Strokeplay championship since third place was officially awarded in 1987. Jonathan Goodall filled third position at Ryston in 2010.
Damien Fleming and Jason Cregan produced two Kerry podium finishes in the senior championship in the same year for the first time ever.
Fleming and Cregan ensured a Kerry player on the podium for the fifth successive season. Jason O’Regan was second twelve months ago, Fleming took silver in 2023 and 2021, while Michael Conway was 2022 Nett winner.
In bagging the final exempt slot for 2026, David O'Leary produced the best performance by a Douglas player in the championship since Liam O’Brien finished third at E.S.B. in 2001.
David narrowly failed to emulate his father John, who took third place at Ferrybank in 1990.
Tralee become the first club to provide a winner (Jonathan Goodall), runner-up (Jason O’Regan), third plave finisher (Jason Cregan) and Nett winner (Michael Conway) in the National Gents Senior Strokeplay championship.
It was a Munster 1-2-3-4 for the third successive year.
Cian Mulcahy is the fifth Collins member to win the National Intermediate Strokeplay championship and the second to do so at St. Anne's after Chris Scannell in 1984. The other Collins winners were John Looney, Niall Lenihan and Owen Shannon.
Cillian Courtney equals his brother Creagh, who was National Intermediate Strokeplay runner-up at Stackallen eleven years ago.
They are the first set of brothers to both collect silver medals in the National Gents Strokeplay championship.
Aidan Spence Murphy delivered a second podium finish for Claycastle in the National Gent’s Intermediate Strokeplay championship. Colin Sheehan finished second in intermediate back in 2009.
Aidan is the first National Boys Matchplay champion to claim a bronze medal in the National Intermediate Strokeplay championship
Pat Sheehan is the third St. Anne's player to win the National Gents Junior Strokeplay championship over his home course, matching Roy Sisk (1984) and Tony Wall (1988).
Sheehan is the fifth St. Anne's member in total to win the National Junior Strokeplay championship. Richard Cunningham and John Drinan were the other winners.
Sheehan’s eleven stroke winning margin is the biggest since Michael O’Sullivan won by thirteen at Killarney in 1978.
2023 National Inter-Club winner William Fitzgerald is the first Fermoy player to finish second in the National Junior Strokeplay championship since Leonard Dowling at NCP in 1980.
Paul Core produced Bagenalstown’s second National Junior Strokeplay championship third place performance in two years. Patrick O’Neill took Junior B bronze twelve months ago.
Paul Core is the first reigning Leinster Strokeplay champion to finish third in the National Gents Junior Strokeplay championship in the same year.
Damien Fleming, Cian Mulcahy and Pat Sheehan are the first players since 1961 to win the respective National Gents Strokeplay championships over 72 holes.
Their respective winning aggregates of 183, 199 and 204 set the all-time low score senior, intermediate and junior totals for 72-hole stagings of the championships.
