Westmeath County Board
Notes 30June2013
Westmeath Pitch and Putt Notes. Westmeath County Matchplay. The county board matchplay took place in Collinstown over
the weekend. With the championship starting early Saturday morning the numbers
in each grade were broken down to leave some entering matches to be played on
Sunday. Play started in the semi finals on Sunday morning after a minutes
silence was observed in memory of one of Westmeath’s finest players Bobby
Gorman of Kilbeggan. The senior semi finals started with an all Custume
showdown between county strokeplay champion Pat Malone and Martin Kenny. Pat
proved the stronger and secured his place in the final where he would face the
winner of Liam Buckley and Alan Hanlon. After a strong start from Alan, Liam
battled back and eventually won. In the final Liam and Pat both played
excellent pitch and putt with Liam holding a strong lead after 18 holes and
continued to hold the gap and win the senior title for 2013. The first inter grade semi final was between Dessie Baker
and Brendan McMahon. Both men are playing to a very high level this year and
whoever would win would be fancied to lift the title. Dessie proved his worth
and beat the young Kilbeggan man and book his place in the final. The second
semi final was between Kilbeggan's Damien Mullins and Collinstown favorite
Stephen Raune. Stephen grinded out a result to beat Damien and ensured a match
against Dessie. The final started in wet conditions and both men made no
mistakes throughout the final but it was Stephen who played superbly all
weekend won by a margin of 3 and 2. The junior men’s final was played between Custume's Sean
Langdon and Lough Owel man Lee Stynes. Sean beat David Corcoran to reach the
final and would be hungry to retain his title. Lee produced a great display in
his semi final match to beat Stuart Tarleton. Over the course of the final both
men played to a very high level but it was Lee who always held the advantage and
won the title in dramatic fashion with a hole in one on the 33rd
hole. The Ladies final was contested between two Kilbeggan
women, Veronica Clarke and Ann Clarke. Both ladies battled the elements and
with good quality pitch and putt Veronica came out on top to win the ladies
title for 2013. Westmeath County Board would like to thank all the players for playing
in the championships over the weekend and also the Collinstown club who had the
course in immaculate condition. Condolence. Westmeath county board who like to pass their condolence
to the Gorman family, Kilbeggan on the passing of Bobby Gorman on Saturday. Bobby
was a member of the Westmeath inter county team who won the national inter
county title in 1978 and will be sadly missed by all in pitch and putt. May he
rest in peace.
