County Strokeplay 2013
Westmeath Strokeplay
Review 2013. On Sunday morning the 2013 Westmeath Strokeplay
Championships were held in Custume Athlone. The course was presented in
excellent condition and it promised to be a fantastic championship, it surely didn’t
disappoint. The gent’s juniors started proceeding at 9am and there was some
excellent pitch and putt played. Playing well so far this year, it was Brendan
McMahon from Kilbeggan who set the pace with a first round of 56 followed by a
second round 46. In second place, two shots behind was Custume player Sean
Langdon on a total of 104. They were closely followed by Gary Middleton of
Collinstown a further two shots back. In the final 18 hole playoff Brendan
played solidly but Sean clawed his way back over the closing holes to force a nine
hole playoff. During the 9 hole playoff Brendan claimed the county junior title
and in doing so joined the ranks of the intermediate grade. The gent’s intermediate grade were next out on the course
and it was no surprise when the Leinster intermediate matchplay champion Dessie
Baker led the way after the first two rounds. Dessie had two rounds of 49 to
hold a 5 shot lead over a number of players. These were Martin Carter (Collinstown),
Niall Corcoran (Lough Owel) and John Joyce (Custume) all on a two round total
of 103. During the playoff Martin closed the gap on Dessie at stages but Dessie
showed his class to claim top spot with a round of 52. In second place it was
Athlone man John Joyce on a total of 156 which was well deserved after a round
of 53 in the playoff. The Ladies grade two was a very close championship. After the
first round Ena Clinton from Collinstown held a two shot lead over Veronica
Clarke of Kilbeggan. In the second round the two ladies battled hard and both finished
on a total of 123 but it was Veronica who pipped Ena, when she produced a
second round score of 60. The Ladies grade one section had seven competitors
and it was Kathleen Carton of Kilbeggan who was leading by 3 shots after the
first round with an excellent round of 57. She was closely followed by a number
of players, Miriam Sheerin (Custume) 60, Moira Nugent (Collinstown) 60, Liz
Bloem (Collinstown) 61 and Eleanor Gillic (Kilbeggan) 63. During the second
round Liz Bloem showed why she is one of the top ladies players in Ireland when
she returned a wonderful score of 49 and win the Ladies grade one title. Last year’s
champion Miriam Sheerin finished second on a total of 116 after she had a 56 in
her second round. Finally to the gents senior section. This grade was always
going to be a close run affair and it proved to be just that. After the first
two rounds it was 2012 champion Michael Buckley who led the way on 10 under
par. He held a slender one shot lead over his brother Liam Buckley
(Collinstown) and last year’s runner up Pat Malone (Custume). Others to make
the playoff in the senior grade were, Anthony Browne, Alan Hanlon, John Browne,
Harry O’Hanlon, Martin Kenny, Jimmy Revins and Sean Dinnegan. After an exciting 18 hole playoff it was Pat
Malone and Liam Buckley who both finished on 15 under par. This ensured both
men would have to battle it out over a further 9 holes to find a winner and it
was Pat Malone (Custume) who went one better than last year and claim the 2013
senior strokeplay championship. Westmeath county board would like to say well done to all
the winners, the Custume club for having the course in excellent condition on
the day and all the people who helped to run the competition. We would also
like to thank our sponsor once again this year, David Corcoran (Lough Owel
Pitch and Putt Club).
