U16 Leinster Strokeplay and Inter counties report
2024 Leinster U16 & U13 Strokeplay + Intercounty Championships @ Trim
Review by Declan Sheedy
An excellent display of Pitch & Putt from Athgarvan’s Peadar O’Toole saw him claim victory and successfully defend his U16 Leinster Stroke Play title in Trim. An opening round of 3 under saw Peadar hold a one-shot advantage going into the second round over Jason Kelly of Bagnelstown with Jack McShane from Gowran a further shot back on 1 under. A brilliant second round of 6 under from Peadar however would see him stamp his authority on the championship with a final total of 9 under par. Another brilliant second round of 6 under from Gowran’s Harry Concannon would propel him up the leaderboard having shot 1 over in the first round and get him in the clubhouse with a total of 5 under which was ultimately good enough to earn Harry the U13 Leinster title for 2024. There was little to separate the chasing pack but in the end, Jason Kelly would take the U16 runner up spot with another very good round of 2 under to go with his opening 52 for a finishing total of 4 under par with Jack McShane finishing on 3 under in third place in the U16 championship. Harry’s victory in lifting the U13 cup, Harry was 3rd in the same championship last year, saw him claim this title this year by 3 shots from defending U13 champion Harry Tiernan of Ryston who took runner up spot this year on a very good score of 2 under par.
In the girl’s championship, nothing could separate Gemma Cuffe of Kilbeggan and Molly O’Toole of Ryston after 36 holes with both girls finishing on 6 over par. Molly, defending girls champion held a 2 shot lead after 18 on 5 over and returned an excellent 1 over second round however Gemma would produce a brilliant second round of 1 under to force a 3 hole play-off. Gemma would bring her strong finish into the play off and edge the very close battle between the two girls and lift the 2024 Leinster Girls Strokeplay crown, reversing their finishing positions from last year. Defending champion Molly would take the runner up spot with Pippa Cuffe from Kilbeggan taking the bronze medal with a 12 over par score.
Congratulation to the 2024 Leinster Strokeplay champions Peadar, Harry and Gemma.
Upon completion of the singles Strokeplay Championship focus quickly switched to the Leinster Intercounty championship where 10 team lined out on their county colours. Two teams of four from each of Kildare, Dublin, Meath and Carlow along with a team each from Westmeath and Kilkenny would battle it out for the title. Players on each team carried forward their best 18 hole score from the Strokeplay and would complete the Intercounty county championship with 18 hole fourball. Kilkenny held the lead going into the fourball on a team score of 5 under followed by defending champions Kildare 1 on 2 under and Carlow 1 on 5 over. First team to make a real statement were Carlow 1 returning an outstanding team total of 13 under for the fourball. Jason Kelly & Kenneth Hickey shot 6 under with Daniel Collins & Hugo O’Brien going one better, shooting 7 under. This gave Carlow 1 the clubhouse team lead on 8 under with the other teams remaining on the course. Kildare 1 would produce an excellent team total of 8 under for the fourball to take the lead on 10 under. Rounds of 5 under from Peadar O’Toole & Adam Byrne along with 3 under from Molly O’Toole & Conor Cruden put the Lilywhites into the lead with first round leaders Kilkenny to come in. Unfortunately for Kilkenny a combined team total in the fourball of 1 under would not be enough to catch Kildare and they would have to settle for the bronze medal with the fast finishing Carlow 1 team taking the silver.
A brilliant championship saw every player wear their county colours with pride and honour and all will look forward to the National Intercounty Championship coming up in the coming weeks.
Congratulations to the Kildare 1 team of Peadar O’Toole, Adam Byrne, Molly O’Toole and Conor Cruden on their victory and defending their title which they won in Poulaphouca last year.
