THE BRIDGE HAS THREE COUNTY CHAMPIONS
What a wonderful weekend for our club, Rochfortbridge pitch and putt club.
This year the Westmeath County strokeplay took place in the fantastic Lough Owel club. AKA the monster! Huge credit must go to Lough owel pitch and putt club and its members. To have such a massive area in that kind of condition is remarkable. The improvement is obviously down to the club's members commitment. Well done to a fantastic club.
There were alot of bridge members involved. Pat McCarthy, Martin White, Colm Yeates, Fergal O Connor, Pat Tyrell, Jack Donoghue, Andrew Coyne, Connor Coyne, Gerry Coyne, Mark Kelly, Derek McKevitt and Sinead Lynam & Patricia McCarthy who played the ladies championship in Kilbeggan, the lawn. All the Gents involved made the playoff in their respective grades.
As for Sinead, Trish and the other ladies the main prize and cup went to the lady with the best 18n 18g combined. Sinead blitzed the field once again claiming her 3rd County title in total. What can we say about Sinead. A class player who is doing great in and out of the club. We're delighted for you Sinead. 👏🏆
I'd like to mention the lads who picked up prizes in Lough Owel,
Gerry Coyne who finished Runner up in the senior grade with a brilliant score.
Jack Donoghue with his best last 18 prize in the intermediate grade
Colm Yeates with his best last 18 prize in the senior grade.
On to the gents champions
In the Junior grade the big interest and expectation was on Andrew Coyne. Inside the club Andrew is absolutely flying and starting to make a name for himself. He is in the top 5 for the Player of the Year league with three or four wins in the league strokeplays. Andrew was very steady all day, kept his composure and by a solitary shot picked up his first county title.
Brilliant Andrew 👏 🏆
In the intermediate grade, which is probably the most competitive grade, with ex seniors and inters flying through the grade, we had more than hope for the bridge lads. All the inters made the payoff with Pat 'Paddy Par' McCarthy leading going out with a fantastic second round of 48. However Pat couldn't see it out. Also there was a great showing from Fergal O Connor with a total of -3. Well done to all from the bridge who made the playoff. Super stuff.
Mark Kelly who was on -3 after the first two rounds shot a super -5 in the playoff which saw him tie with Lough Owel whizz kid David Keirnan. This match went to a 9 hole playoff. It was very tight for the 9 holes but Mark held it together and won the playoff by two shots making him, for the second time in 10 years, a Westmeath strokeplay County Champion. 👏🏆
In the senior grade we had two members competing. Gerry Coyne and Colm Yeates. Colm has been consistently putting in great scores since joining the top grade. He went on to shoot -5 in the playoff to claim the last 18 prize. Great stuff from Colm. Gerry who is always the man to beat with exceptional quality in every part of his game was just pipped by a strong player. Gerry picked up the runner up prize.
I'd like to mention the county board officials who were down running the championship. Ray Fay, Colm Yeates and Alan Hanlon. The championship was very well run.
Once again well done to all from the bridge who took part and did so well. You are all keeping the bridge on the map. Great weekend.
