Provincial Scotch foursomes review

Provincial Scotch foursomes review

Following last weekends Provincial Scotch foursomes, Frances Ryan, communications and media officer takes a look back at the events and winners from Trim and Bishopstown. Although it started as a calm and balmy morning in Bishopstown, 1st session players were soon donning rain gear as the dark clouds gathered.  Pairings from all over Munster forged their way through the morning but as the day progressed conditions were only to get worse.

MUNSTER 25th Mixed

Locals Linda Griffin, (Munster Junior Matchplay Champion) and her partner Sean Looney were to lead after the morning session on 90pts.  Fellow club mates Ian McCarthy and Leslie Gilmore were 3 points behind and tied with Jamie and Charlotte Blake, Tralee on 87 pts.  The Bishopstown pair had the better back 18 and went on to take runner up place with the Tralee pair taking best 1st session nett.

As conditions deteriorated in the afternoon’s session, pairs battled through horrendous rain to try and reproduce scores to match the morning session.  Mary Quinn and Sean McCormack from Lakeside shot 86 pts which was to be the best nett score of the afternoon.  They also tied with Tipperary’s Michael Brennan and Breda White, last year’s gross winners, on 77 points for the overall gross.  After a breakdown on the back 6s the Tipperary Hills pair retained their Gross winning streak and Mary and Sean took 2nd session nett.

MUNSTER 26th Non –mixed

Much like Saturday, the morning began pleasant but again, although not as bad, players were soon gathering rain gear.

The morning session was to see some high scoring, setting the target for the afternoon session.  Ian McCarthy, mixed runner up from the day before was looking to go 1 better with partner Stephen Conlon Bishopstown on 94pts.  This was to be challenged by the father, son pair of Tony and Jamie Blake, Tralee who also carded 94 pts.  The Tralee pair would go to the back 18 to clinch the title making it 2 breakdowns in 2 days for local pairs, proving the high standard of scoring even in adverse conditions.

The gross score of 93pts was set in the morning session by John Walsh, Collins and Frank Dineen, St Annes.  Although some came close this would be the best gross score of the day.  Morty and Trevor Ahern from the Collins club would take the 1st session nett on 92 pts while Joe O’Riordan and Michael Farrell from Bruff on 86 pts would take the 2nd session best nett on a breakdown from Colm and Joe O’Donnell Bishopstown.

All players over the weekend must be commended for their perseverance through the terrible conditions which prevailed in Munster.

LEINSTER 25TH May Mixed

Better conditions prevailed in Leinster as previous champions and new pairs took to the course in Trim.

Scoring standard was to be set in the first session in Leinster with both the winners and runner up emerging from the morning. Lee and Sharon Haines, Royal Meath, were to take the overall on 96 pts while locals Nuala Stafford and John Troy, Trim, would take runner up by a narrow 1 point of 95.

Husband and wife team of Tracey Redmond and Keith Redmond (Erry) would take the gross on 85pts.  No stranger to winning in this competition, Tracey is a four-time winner (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011) together with her brother Joe, with whom she also claimed second and Best Gross. Husband Keith is a former Dublin Matchplay champion.  Paddy Kelly & Bridie Cummins, Trim  took best 1st session nett winning on the back 18 from club mates Evan Ganley and Paula Weldon on 89pts.  Darlene Parr and Phelim Convery Cloghogue were the clear winners of session 2 nett on 88pts.

LEINSTER 26TH NON-MIX

This was to be a highly contested Championship as Alan Kierans & Derek Reynolds, Killineer on 98 pts emerged winners on a back 18 breakdown from Anne Jackson & Ashlene McKevitt, Cloghogue  also on 98pts.

Erry pair Jimmy Taylor and Aengus Coughlan who were hoping to improve on their Best 2nd Session achievement at Collinstown, were to emerge as the best gross winners with 93 pts which equaled the winning gross score in Munster the same day and from the same session.

Session 1 best nett went to Martin Flynn & Peter Kearney, McDonagh on 91 pts while  Valerie Rogers & Patricia McGovern, Cloghogue won the 2nd session nett on 95 pts.

Congratulations to all winners in both Provinces over the past weekend.
