IT was a momentous day for both Westmeath and Tipperary Pitch & Putt with both counties claiming historic Provincial Inter-County titles in the Gents and Ladies Grades respectively. Westmeath led from start to finish on home turf in Collinstown today as they had five shots to spare over defending champions Louth on 424 with Pat Malone, Dessie Baker, Michael Buckley, John Browne, Martin Kenny and Alan Hanlon guiding Westmeath to a much sought after win. Dublin were third on 436.

Tipperary won a surprisingly comfortable Munster Ladies Inter-County title with a comprehensive 40 shot win over Cork on 480, their first success in the competition since they last did so back in Lakeside in 1996. Led by team captain Michelle McCarthy, Gemma and Shula McCarthy, Bridget Shelley, Mary Quinn and Martha O’Brien were the winning six for the Premier County as they prevented Cork from claiming a clean sweep of the titles in Munster. The Cork Juvenile team of Cian Morrison, Charlie Morrissey, Conor Irwin, Ryan Towler, Anthony McSweeney and David Howard regained their Munster title with an 11 shot win over Kerry on 444. Tipperary were third on 503 in this grade. The Cork Gents team won their fourth successive title in the province with victory over hosts Tipperary by three shots on 427. The Rebels were represented by John Walsh, Ray Murphy, John Cahill, Brian Delaney, Kieran Dunscombe and Sean Doolan with team captain Paudie O’Sullivan collecting the Claret Jug on the team’s behalf. Kerry were third in the Gents grade on 438.

Three shots was also the margin between Dublin and Kildare in the Leinster Ladies Inter-County with the Dubs just shading matters with a score of 467. Dublin were represented by Geraldine Ward, Sheelagh Elmes, Maree O’Toole, Linda Thomson, Philo Condron and Siobhan Keely with Offaly third again this year on 498.
