The Pitch and Putt fraternity in Tipperary, along with many others from around the country, are mourning the loss of the gentle giant, Sean Keane (RIP).
At the Anner Hotel, Thurles in December 2002, Sean Keane was rightly inducted into the P.P.U.I. Hall of Fame in recognition of his services to sport.
Sean enjoyed an excellent administrative career, in which he served Tipperary County Board for over 25 years as a firm but fair Chairman and as an industrious Treasurer.
He delivered a critical sponsorship to the P.P.U.I. in the shape of his company Blue Hawk Gypsum Industries, who generously backed the Inter-County championship for a number of years.
Sean boasted an impressive playing record in which he won numerous Tipperary County championships and contended in many provincial and national events – the pinnacle of which was representing Tipperary in the Inter-County at his beloved Tipperary Hills in 1990.
He was a prime mover in the reopening of the Tipperary Hills course in recent years. That dream was realised in 2009 and Sean Keane was named President of Tipperary Hills as reward for his tireless work on the project, an honour he greatly appreciated.
Sean’s proudest moment in the sport came when he was unanimously elected as a Patron of the Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland at the 2010 Convention in Athlone.
A quietly spoken, thoughtful and erudite man, Sean Keane was always generous with his time and in his support of others.
