U-16

EVAN Carry once again led the way at the National U-16 Strokeplay in 2017, retaining the Eugene McCarthy Cup by five strokes in Erry today. The Castletown player broke away from an 18 hole tie for the lead on three under par that included Dominic Scully from the host club and Deerpark’s Jack McCarthy with a fine second 18 of seven under par to break double figures on 10 under par 98, two shots off his winning score in Royal Meath last year.

Carry joins Waterford Crystal’s Barry O’Neill and Channonrock’s Shane Redmond as being only the third player to have even won the competition more than once. Dominic Scully would eventually go on to claim second for the host club with five under par with a strong second round of five under par giving Munster U-16 Matchplay Champion Cian Murphy of St Annes third overall with four under par.

Jack Mullins of Kilbeggan also had four under par but ended up with the 10-13 prize on countback as he shot rounds of one and three under par respectively.

U-20

Douglas’ Cian Morrison was crowned the first ever winner of the PPUI’s National U-20 Championship today as his score of 12 under par gave him a five shot victory over his nearest challenger, Ross O’Reilly from Old County in Dublin. Two rounds of six under par made up Morrison’s 36 hole winning score as O’Reilly held off a late push from Cian’s Douglas club-mate Ronan O’Driscoll for second.

O’Reilly finished on seven under par with three and four par rounds as a closing round of five under par gave O’Driscoll third on six under par ahead of former National U-16 Champion Creagh Courtney from Deerpark on five under par.
