Munster Ladies Matchplay Preview
Small but select fields at Douglas

Breda White (Tipperary Hills) opens her Munster Senior Matchplay title defence against last year’s intermediate champion Margaret Hennessy (Riverdale). First winner in 1982, Breda is aiming to lift the Cup for the eleventh time in all and for the third time in the last four years. As holder of the National Intermediate Strokeplay championship, Margaret contested the play-off for the 2024 crown at Stackellen, narrowly losing out to Valerie Rogers (Cloghogue).
The winner of this match will enter a semi-final against Fermoy’s Ailish Sexton. For Margaret that would be to renew recent rivalry for 2022 National Junior Strokeplay champion Ailish was also part of that Stackallen play-off for the 2024 National Intermediate Strokeplay championship. All three, Margaret, Breda and Ailish, represented Munster in last year’s Interprovincial Challenge at Lakeside.
The bottom half of the draw brings together 2011 champion Eleanor Walsh (Fermoy) and the 2018 winner Mary Murray (Rocklodge) in a preliminary round match. Mary has reached the last three finals without getting over the line and will be itching to set that particular record straight. That gives the Fermoy and Rocklodge ladies identical records as Eleanor has been runner-up on three occasions.
2023 champion at Tralee, Sarah O’Neill (Collins) has received a bye into the second semi-final and awaits the winner of the Eleanor Walsh/Mary Murray clash. If Mary Murray makes the last four, She and Sarah will reprise their recent Cork Matchplay final joust at Inniscarra, won by Sarah on the final green.
First player in to action in the intermediate championship is Tralee’s Lisa O’Connor who claimed the Cup on home soil two years ago. Lisa’s preliminary round task is to play 2024 All Ireland Matchplay Nett Cup runner-up Gemma Martin (Hillview).
The reward for victory in the above match is to meet Vera McCarthy (Collins) in the top semi-final. Vera won the provincial Matchplay championship at senior level at Riverdale in 2005 and was runner-up in the intermediate grade twelve months ago.
Cork duo Linda Griffin (Bishopstown) and Nicola Ahern (Collins) are straight through to the second semi-final. Linda claimed the Munster Junior Matchplay Cup in impressive fashion at Cunnigar last season. 2003 National Junior Strokeplay champion Nicola linked with her husband Morty to win the 2019 Munster Mixed Foursomes, a title Linda claimed alongside clubmate Sean Looney in 2024.
Former champion Catriona O’Connor (Tralee) headlines the junior championship. Catriona is drawn against Cork Inter-County player Jo Henchin (St. Stephen’s) who won the 2022 Munster Ladies Social tournament.
First match out in junior is an all-Cunnigar affair between 2024 Cork Matchplay finalist Julie Kiely and Michelle O’Connell (a member of the Cunnigar winning quartet in the 2016 National Mixed Team Event).
2024 Munster Inter-County winner with Kerry, Charlotte Blake (Tralee) faces Serena O’Neill (Larkspur Park) who was also on the podium that day with Tipperary intermediates
2023 Munster Junior Strokeplay runner-up Gillian Morrissey (St. Anne’s) has seen success in the Mixed Foursomes format at county and national level. Gillian’s opponent is Cork Matchplay champion Megan Ahern (Collins) who won the Munster Girls Matchplay championship in 2023.
Three-time All-Ireland Matchplay Nett Cup semi-finalist Veronica Anglim (Hillview) is up against 2023 Cork Strokeplay/Matchplay double winner Eileen Hanley (The Ranges). Veronica will be hoping to build on her Munster Matchplay semi-final appearance last year while Eileen will take inspiration from her provincial Strokeplay bronze medal in 2023.
Reigning provincial Strokeplay champion Lorraine Creed (Hillview) plays in the final preliminary round match against 2024 National Over 55s Junior Grade Strokeplay bronze medallist Georgina Harte (St. Stephen’s). Lorraine won the 2023 Munster Mixed Foursomes while Georgina was Cork Mixed Foursomes runner-up in 2017.
Already through to the quarter-finals are Nuala McNamara and Bernadette O’Regan. The Collins and Tralee players meet each other in the last eight. Nuala claimed the Munster Strokeplay trophy at Fermoy in 2023 while Bernadette was provincial Mixed Foursomes runner-up the same year.
