MacBride members ‘gobble’ up Turkeys in 2013!
Club hosts very successful annual Turkey league
THE annual
MacBride Turkey League saw a major sponsor coming on board with the league
called the Railway Arms Christmas Turkey League after publican Barlow Moore kindly
offered his sponsorship for the ten-week event. Taking
place between October and December, the league was very well contested with
prizes being awarded for two grades every week. The first
week saw Dermot O’Brien winning in Grade One with a score of 44 nett while
Keith Smyth also got his turkey on the first week with a score of 41 nett. The second
week saw club Chairman Peter Woods bagging his bird with a fantastic score of
44 Gross and Grade 2 was won by Steven Kelly with a score of 50 Gross. Like every
year in the Turkey League, there is always a week where a player bucks the
trend and puts in a fantastically low score and this year it was the turn of
Seamus Dykstra who carded a thrilling score of 39 nett to take home his turkey
in Grade two while in Grade one Ray McKenna bagged his bird with 42 nett. Week four
saw Padraig Sarsfield setting a brilliant score of 10 under (44 gross) to win
his turkey while in grade two Richie McCann who has been very impressive since
joining the club this year, won his prize with a score of 51 gross. The league
took a break from singles play on week five with a 36-hole Scotch Foursomes
competition and a score of 39 7/8 nett gave the team of Peter Kelly and Brendan
Kirwan their birds. Week six of
the Turkey Season at Mac Bride Pitch and Putt Club saw Barry Thornton winning
in Grade one with a score of 43 gross while Gordon Hatch shot a score of 49
gross to win in Grade two while Keith Smyth won his Roast with a score of 46
gross. The winner
of Grade one on week seven was Aaron Murray who put in a great score of 42 nett
to take home his turkey while the grade two winner was Jimmy Flood with a score
of 42 nett. Like
previous years, the Dikes competition is hotly contested in both grades and
this year Alan Cooper was the first player in Grade one to birdie all 18 holes
to take home the prize and the Senior grade player also carding a score of 44
gross to win his turkey while Peter Kelly won Grade two with a score of 49
gross. The final
two weeks of the league saw a host of winners taking home prizes with Patsy
Gregory winning his bird in grade one on week nine with a score of 47 nett
while Phil Healy (H/c 9), won his prize with a score of 37 nett. There was also
some good fortune for Barry Thornton in Grade One when he took home his roast with
a score of 45 Nett (H/C +1) and after the combined scores from the ten weeks
were added, Barry was also deemed the winner of the hamper prize. The final
week saw a Scotch Foursomes competition once again and the team of David
O’Brien and Gordon Hatch won with a score of 42 gross. Presentation
of all prizes took place in MacBride Clubhouse just before the Christmas break
and Secretary Keith Smyth thanked all members for taking part and to Barlow
Moore for his kind sponsorship.
