Communications & Press Officer Jason O’Connor reports on today’s proceedings in the Provincial Mixed Foursomes competitions.
Munster
Just like two years ago when it was held at the same venue, there was a home winner at Lakeside today as the duo of former National Ladies Intermediate Strokeplay Champion Bridget Shelley and Joe O’Connor were victorious by two shots from the pair who were actually victorious in this event on home turf in 2013.
Frances Ryan and Martin McCormack looked like they would go a long way towards winning a second title as they shot an impressive 9up in their first round to lead by two from the combination of Shelley and O’Connor. Ryan and McCormack couldn’t quite match their great start however as they improved their score by only two in the second round to finish on 11up. Shelly and O’Connor would shoot 6up on the other hand to take the title with 13up and complete another great win for the Templemore club.
The 18 hole prizes were dominated by the Cunnigar club in Dungarvan with 2009 winners Cáit Mulcahy and Aidan O’Rourke taking the First 18 prize with 7up as the pair finished third overall after the 36 holes on 10up, one of only three pairs to get to double scores on the up side. The second 18 was won by their club-mates Lorraine Troy and Liam Simms also with a score of 7up as they defeated Riverdale duo Margaret and Dean Courtney for the prize on countback.
The Gross prize was won by Rocklodge’s Mary Murray and John Tracey with 5up.
Leinster
It was a second success in four years for the Tullamore club in this event as Christine McCarthy and Jimmy Scanlon followed club-mates Denise Pyke and Paul Galvin in winning this event in The Acres today like the latter duo did in Kilbeggan back in 2012. They won it in the Second Round in essence as a round of 7up gave them victory with that same score after shooting a level par round for their First 18. In total its Tullamore’s third victory in this event going back to 1991 when Maura Deering and Enda Walsh were victorious on home turf
Christine and Jimmy beat a total of three teams who finished on 6up, two consistent rounds of 3up giving Lucan duo Brenda Purcell and Terry McMorrow the runners-up prize ahead of the others to finish on the same score. The Gross prize was also decided on countback as St Bridgets’ Chrissie Byrne and Ryston’s Darren Keogh just piped National Mixed Foursomes holders Catherine McCreevy and Wally Sheridan for the prize. McCreevy and Sheridan were the only pair on 6up not to finish with a prize as 6up proved to be good enough for Laytown duo Ann and Paddy Bird to win the First 18 prize despite finishing the tournament on 2up having led at halfway stage.
The Second 18 prize on the day was won by Ferbane duo Kathleen O’Lone and Michael Kenny with a score of 5up.
