Flashback to August '23 bank holiday treble scratch cup win

On August 5th ,6th and 7th   2023, something phenomenal occurred in the Pitch and Putt world that no player had achieved before.  1 player from Bruff won 3 scratch cups in 1 weekend and amazed the playing community.

Not only did he do the triple scratch cups but played 162 holes bogey free.

2020 National Matchplay champion, recently runner up in the World championships and the Irish Open, Kieran Earls achieved this amazing fete.  So, on the 12-month anniversary I caught up with Kieran at Lakeside Scratch cup to recall the events of the bank holiday weekend in ’23.

He tells me it was a funny one as that weekend he was supposed to go on holiday but the flight got cancelled so he wasn’t to play pitch and putt at all.  What was looking like a bad weekend turned into a good weekend.

Ardnacrusha was to be the first win of the weekend where he finished -26, 4 shots clear of Dermot Tuohy from Cill Na Mona

Recalling Bruff, the second of his wins he tells me” I played well in Bruff, played my final 18 with John Cahill.  Tommy Hanley, a local player was coming up behind, but I managed to get over the line on the last hole”.  Finishing again on -26 and 3 shots clear of his final 18 playing partner.

After winning the double the thoughts turned to celebrating but as Kieran says “we were in 2 minds whether to go to Mellows but in the heel of the hunt we hopped in the car and went”

After 36 holes Kieran had shot 17 under par, 2 shots behind Sean O’Connor from Erry who was 19 under as they went into the last round.  Both players started well with birdies but on the fifth O’Connor took a five which Kieran says” it gave me the edge I needed to move ahead of him. On the back 9 O’Connor was 6 under which kept me going, we were both -27 going to the last hole and I sunk a putt from around 15 feet to win by a shot”.  Another amazing finish to his 3rd win in 3 days. After all this excitement he eventually got to go on holiday, a fitting reward after a busy weekend.

As we are chatting, Kieran has just finished 36 holes at Lakeside on -9 and was awaiting the final 18. So, what’s on the cards for this weekend?  “Well, he says, we’re here today and we have Bruff tomorrow, I’ll try and retain it and then Mellows on Monday.  I’ll go and defend that too but there are enough fellows out there contending the cups, I’ll give it a go anyway, he says.  “I’m looking forward to the National Strokeplay in Glenville next weekend”.

What are the odds coming Monday that the Bruff man will repeat last years fantastic achievement? That remains to be seen. Shooting -8 in the final 18 at Lakeside was enough to secure his first win of the weekend. All eyes on Bruff and Mellows.  Congratulations Kieran.
