NOVEMBER 8TH ,9TH AND 10TH the final event of the WPPT ‘24   took place in McDonagh Pitch and putt course.  The course was presented in magnificent condition for the 3 day event which saw Pitch and Putt Ireland players vying to become Irish Masters Champion.

Description automatically generatedAfter a fantastic 36-hole score of 88 heading into the final days round, Michael Fennell from the Lakeside club led by 1 stroke from John Walsh 89 (Collins) and Jason Cregan 89(Tralee).  Hot on their heels were 2023 National Strokeplay champion Stephen Shoer (Riverdale) and 2023 National Matchplay Champion Stephen O’ Reilly (Hillview)

A final 18 round of 11 under par for John Walsh, the 2013 World Strokeplay Champion gave him a final score of 132, thirty under par and 5 shots clear of his nearest rivals.

John who holds National Strokeplay and Matchplay titles has also 7 Munster Strokeplay championship wins matched by 7 Munster Matchplay championship successes and twice a European Team championship winner (2003, 2005) and twice a World Cup winner (2012, 2016) with Ireland.

David Sexton Fermoy, 2023 Munster Strokeplay champion and recently Runner-up with Ailish in the 2024 Catalan International Pairs, secured 2nd place by shooting a fantastic final round of 12 under par.

Jason Cregan, Tralee (Munster Matchplay ’24 champion) and Michael Fennell Lakeside, (Tipperary National team &County Matchplay Champion ‘24), shooting 48 and 49 respectively placed them in 3rd and 4th position with a finishing score of 25 under par also.

 John Cahill Fermoy (Multiple Interclub team and County team winner) being the only other player to shoot 12 under on the Sunday was joined on 24 under par by Stephen O’Reilly and Stephen Shoer.  Bryan Delaney, Kieran Earls, Jason O’ Regan and George McGreal finishing 20,19 and 18 under par for their weekend.

   5-time National Strokeplay and Reigning National Ladies Strokeplay Senior Champion Chrissie           Sheedy led the Ladies challenge going into the final round on 103, with Glenda Hoey on 105.  The final 18 saw the 6-time national Matchplay title holder card a 51 to leave her on 154, eight under par for the event.

 

Glenda Hoey (2021 Dublin Matchplay champion, National Inter-County team runner-up in 2024) shooting 52 to finish on 157, five under par for her 54 holes and taking the runner-up spot.

An interesting fact about the Ladies trophy.  Pilar Montero is a legendary Catalan lady player, who has won over 3,000 trophies in her distinguished career, hence the name of the Ladies cup.

  Senior: John Manning Cup

  Ray Murphy (St Anne’s) Reigning National Matchplay Champion, winner of the John Manning Cup, had a score of       98 going into the final round.  The 7 time National Matchplay Champion recorded an excellent 11 under par (equaling John Walsh’s f18 winning score) 43 to give the St Anne’s player a 6-shot win on 141.  

   Declan Mulpeter (Kildare Gents Inter-County teams and on occasion Gents team Manager) with a 48 better final 18      and total of 147 took 2nd place.

 

The Senior trophy has been dedicated by the WPPT to John Manning in appreciation for his many years of dedication to Pitch and Putt.  Well-deserved and congratulations.

                 Congratulations to all players who took part over the 3 days and huge congratulations to the McDonagh club for hosting the                      event and having the course in pristine condition.
