Gerry McHugh RIP

Gerry McHugh RIP

Dublin Pitch and Putt lost a true great with the passing last week of Gerry McHugh RIP.

Initially a stalwart of the Erin’s Isle club in Finglas and later a mainstay of Portmarnock, Gerry achieved much success on the course, helping Dublin to successive Inter-County championship victories at Cloghogue in 1982 and at Navan a year later.

Dublin Strokeplay runner-up in 1984, Gerry shared those Inter-County successes with the likes of Gus Carolan, Anthony Malone, Junior Smith, Liam Dunne, Pat Kelly and Noel Costello.

The consummate team player, Gerry linked with Carolan, Malone, Freddie Poole and Johnny Price on the Dublin side that took second place in the Inter-County championship at Rocklodge in 1984.

A stylish Dublin Strokeplay champion at Hammond Lane in 1977, Gerry was runner-up in the 1978 All Ireland Strokeplay championship at Killarney, losing a play-off with Kevin McDonnell (Cement) after a tie on 102.

Part of the Erin's Isle 1977 and 1979 Dublin Senior League winning sides, Gerry teamed-up with wife to be Marion to capture Best Gross in the 1975 National Mixed Foursomes at Lucan.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Marion, Gerry’s family and many friends.
