GENTS NATIONAL STROKEPLAY '24 PREVIEWS
INTERMEDIATE GENTS
There’s also a formidable looking field for Saturday’s intermediate championship at Glenville.
The honour of striking the opening teeshot goes to Dublin Inter-County player Tom McMorrow (Lucan). McMorrow finished tied second in the 2012 National Intermediate Strokeplay championship at R.G.S.C., losing runners-up and third slots on the tiebreaker. Playing partner Frank O’Brien (Collins) took third at Glenville in 2018 and was denied third, on the tiebreaker, twelve months ago and also at Rocklodge in 2013. The opening group is completed by leading Kildare qualifier Ben Phelan (St. Bridget’s).
Conor Gorey (Lucan) was an All-Ireland Juvenile Inter-County winner with Dublin in 2011. Martin O’Sullivan (St. Anne’s) will be hoping to build on last year’s junior silver medal performance.
Athgarvan’s Kevin Lambe was Junior Best Nett winner at Ryston five years ago. Kevin will be accompanied by 2017 Cork Junior Strokeplay champion Karl O’Keeffe (Collins).
Ian Leech (St. Anne’s) was inaugural Nation al Mixed Foursomes runner-up at Bellewstown in 2019.
Damien Long (Collins) has seen success in Munster Strokeplay events. Michael McGrath (Larkspur Park) is a player of vast experience, a National Inter-County winner with Tipperary in 1995 at Lakewood and Munster Strokeplay runner-up in 1996. Alan Keating (St. Anne’s) reached the 2022 Munster Intermediate Matchplay final.
One of National Inter-Club runner-up 2023 Aidan O'Sullivan’s (Bruff) fellow competitors will be Morty Ahern (Collins), who has won National Club Tournament, Skoda National Mixed Team and All Ireland Intermediate Inter-County Challenge titles. This duo will be joined by 2017 Munster Junior Matchplay runner-up Adrian Anglim (Hillview), who has seen considerable success in Scotch Foursomes events.
All-Ireland Schools winner with St. Joseph’s Rochfortbridge in 2010, Jonathan Daly (Rochfortbridge) is joined by Munster Junior Inter-County runner-up Ger Roche (Ardnacrusha). That threeball is completed by 2022 Munster Junior Strokeplay runner-up Michael O’Donoghue (Tipperary Hills).
2013 National Over-55 Strokeplay runner-up John Carton (Kilbeggan) will join Bruff’s Patrick Earls and Marco Comerford (Hillview).
In a high-quality threeball towards the end of the first session, Munster Strokeplay runner-up Kevin Flynn (Ardnacrusha) will set off in the company of Leinster Matchplay finalist Billy Buckley (Collinstown) and former National Over-55s champion Sean Minogue (Riverdale)
Sean Quinn, Luke Devlin and Frank Connolly will have host club player’s chances. Devlin was a National Juvenile Inter-County silver medallist with Dublin at Glenville in 2019. Mixed Foursomes specialist Connolly was third in this championship at Lakeside away back in 2000, the year he won the Leinster Matchplay championship at C.P.M.
2022 National Junior Inter-County challenge winner (with Limerick), Peadar McCarthy (Bruff) will be hoping to build on experience gained in last year’s Junior final round as he forms part of the concluding threeball of the early session as do 2022 Trim Scratch Cup winner John Donnelly (Lough Owel) and Mellows representative Donal Tarpey, who made last year’s final eighteen.
National Juvenile Inter-County winner, at Glenville with Kerry in 2019, Bobby McCarron (Listowel) is paired with 2018 Cork Matchplay champion Gerard Hogan (St. Stephen’s) and top Meath qualifier Bazz McDonnell (Laytown).
The 11.30 grouping contains three proven performers. Lucan’s Pat McDermott is the reigning Dublin and Leinster Strokeplay champion. Eddie Hogan (St. Stephen’s) was the 2009 Cork Strokeplay champion and the 2019 County Matchplay runner-up. 2022 Leinster Junior Matchplay kingpin David Holland is part of the ongoing Gowran success story.
Out just after that trio is St Patrick's member Ruairì Fortune, the 2017 Leinster Strokeplay champion and successful Wexford Inter-County player.
1995 champion Michael Herlihy (E.S.B.) tees-off alongside Aaron Brazil (Lucan), a Dublin championship winner at inter and junior levels and Nicholas Brennan (Gowran), a two-time Leinster Schools runner-up, who was fourth in junior in 2017. Herlihy took second place in the delayed 2020 championship at St. Stephen’s
Paul Gorby (St Patrick's) has experienced success in the Inter-County arena with Wexford.

2023 Munster Matchplay runner-up Keith O’Brien (Tralee) has drawn Jimmy Quinn, now playing out of Tullamore. Quinn was runner-up in the 2005 National Junior Strokeplay championship at Royal Meath and also runner-up in the National Intermediate Strokeplay championship of 2017 at Hillview. 2017 National Intermediate/Junior Inter-Club winner with Fermoy, Jimmy helped Cork to Munster and All Ireland Intermediate Inter-County championship glory in 2019.
2014 National Over-55 Strokeplay champion William McNally (Stackallen) will partner another experienced hand - 1989 Munster Strokeplay team event winner Rodger Guthrie (Tralee).
Nathan Cronin (Deerpark) has won the Under-16 Inter-County with Kerry in each of the past two seasons. Robert McCabe (Royal Meath) was runner-up to Pat McDermott in the recent Leinster Strokeplay at Ierne.
2024 Leinster Mixed Foursomes champ Derek Reynolds (Killineer) is a two-time finalist with Louth in the All Ireland Intermediate Inter-County challenge.
James Fleming (Deerpark), who made the 2018 play-off at this year’s venue, will lead out the final group at 12.42. Also in this threesome are Meath Junior Matchplay champion Thomas Hodgins (Laytown) and 2022 MacBride Scratch Cup winner Olan Flanagan (MacBride)
Winning 36-hole score in 1977 at Glenville was 100. Leading 36-hole tally in 2018 was 105 while eventually, a one under par aggregate made the play-off. Climatic conditions will surely be more favourable this time round.
