Strong Start for the Irish in Urduna

European Championships Day One Report image

THE Irish Pitch & Putt team made a strong start to their bid to add the European Championship to their World Cup success of two years ago as they topped the Strokeplay standings in the nine team event before following up with a 9-0 over the tournament hosts in their first game of the Matchplay Group Phase at Urduna in the Basque Country.

Bruff’s Thomas Hanley set a new individual score record for the tournament with a 13 under par score as the combined score for the six person Irish team stood at 44 under par, 29 shots clear of their nearest challengers in Catalonia. That put them in a Matchplay group with the host Basque Country and France as they started off their match with the Basques by claiming all three Foursomes matches, the duo of team captain John Ross Crangle & James Cleary winning by 9&7, John Cahill & Eamon Gibney 4&3 with a 3&2 win for Bryan Delaney and Hanley giving Ireland the early advantage.

In the Singles Ireland had another clean sweep to give them a 9-0 victory overall as John Cahill was victorious in his match by 8&7. Ireland play France in their second Group match on Saturday in which victory would put them into the top Group to decide the title alongside the other two Group winners.
