Pat Malone wins Kilbeggan Scratch Cup

Just when we thought things couldnt get any better after the exciting showpiec at last weekend’s Custume Scratch Cup, our very own Pat Malone won the Paddy Carton Memorial Scratch Cup last Sunday in dramatic style.  Pat’s victory came after a 3 hole playoff.  As always the Kilbeggan Scratch Cup draws a big crowd, especially top class senior players from the likes of Westmeath, Offaly, Dublin, Meath etc..  To make the final round cut is an achievement but to win this particular Scratch Cup is an outstanding accomplishment.

With 129 players taking part the cut was posted at 9 under.  Pat had a great score of 12 under for the 2 rounds with Dessie Baker (Lough Owel) leading on 14 under.  Also in contention going into the last round was Rene Bloem (Collinstown) on 12 under and it was these 3 players that would tie after the final round and force a 3 hole playoff.  Pat was tremendous in his final round with birdies on the way in at 13, 15, 16 and 17 to finish on 19 under par with Rene and Dessie.  So to the 3 hole playoff.  All 3 players birdied the 1st.  Rene bogeyd the 2nd, Dessie par and Pat rolled in another birdie.  Advantage Pat playing the 3rd but Dessie put the pressure on by pitching within 2 foot.  Pat, after coming so close to winning last year was not going to be denied as he held a terrific putt from just off the green to bridie the 3rd hole and also take the title.  Brilliant!  Pat follows in the footsteps of fellow Custume player Martin Kenny who won this back in 2011.   Need to also mention that Pat is involved in the Westmeath Inter County Trials and he has scored very well in the first 2 trials to date.  Congrats and well done Pat.

Congrats to Kevin Balfe who followed up his Junior Section win at Custume Scratch Cup by also taking the Junior prize in Kilbeggan with 6 under par.  Kevin is playing some terrific Pitch & Putt at the moment.  Another player on top form is Martin Kenny who also made the final round in Kilbeggan on 9 under par.  Well done lads.
