Communications & Press Officer Jason O’Connor looks back on yesterday’s National Scotch Foursomes Finals in Bellewstown Co Meath.

A NEW format (Scotch Foursomes) and a new scoring system (Stableford) for Pitch & Putt Ireland’s major pairs event got its first outing yesterday as nearly the same points total won both the Mixed and Non-Mixed sections.

The winners of the Mixed came from a combination of both the Rathfeigh and Oldcastle clubs in the host county as Paula Lynch from Oldcastle and Kevin Carolan from Rathfeigh shot 17 under par to combine for an overall total of 99 points Nett. Their second round Nett of 51 points was particularly impressive as they had eight to spare over four different pairings who all had 91 points.

Marie and Richard Brennan from the host club had Nett rounds of 42 and 49 points with their second round total ensuring they finished second overall as rounds of 45 and 46 points gave Tullamore duo Jimmy Scanlon & Christine McCarthy the First Session prize on countback from the pairs of Kathleen Geraghty & Ian Farrelly along with Joanne & Paul Cooney of Seapoint who both had 45 points for their second 18’s.

Kathleen and Ian missed out by one for the Gross prize as well despite shooting 85 points without their handicaps as Christine Byrne and Darren Keogh continued their strong record in the prize from the old Mixed Foursomes event in shooting 14 under par with rounds of five and nine under par as Kathleen & Ian had 13 under par. The second session prize went to Rocklodge’s Mary & John Murray meanwhile as their total of 90 points was one better than both Martin & Trish Fox of Rochfortbridge and Lucan’s Barbara Furlong & Tom McMorrow.

In the inaugural Non-Mixed section meanwhile the winning pair also came from the first session as local pair William Corry and Derick Seery had 13 under par in shooting 98 points. They were pushed hard in the second session by Michael Long & Ian Leech of St Annes as they shot 16 under par without their handicaps. However it came down to Nett in determining the winner as two 49’s as for William and Derick as opposed to a 50 and 48 for Michael & Ian was the decisive factor in the local pair being the first winners of this section.

The Gross went to Killineer’s Ian Donnelly & Sean Clerkin as they had two nine under par rounds of 45 points to finish on 90 points, 18 under par without their handicaps. First Session prize-winners were Castletown’s Gerry Thompson & Stephen McCabe with 96 points after rounds of 46 and 50 as Hillview’s Adrian Anglim & Joe Hickey won the second session prize in the Non-Mixed with 90 points (two 45’s) ahead of three pairs that shot 89 points.
