Everyone long gone home but still the buzz of our three finals today remains!!! Well done to Damien, Mary & Sarah on their wins and Rocklodge on an outstanding presentation of their course. THERE were two stirring comebacks in the National Pitch & Putt Matchplay Finals on Monday afternoon in Rocklodge, Cork as Deerpark’s Damien Fleming and Rocklodge’s Mary Murray both came back from sizeable margins to win the Mens and Ladies Scratch Finals respectively.
Damien was five down with 13 holes to play against defending champion Bryan Delaney of Bishopstown in the 36 hole decider but managed to turn the games on its head in the closing nine holes by drawing level with four holes to play before taking the lead for the first time at the penultimate 35th hole. Delaney did force a playoff by winning the last regulation hole but a birdie on the first hole third time around was enough for Fleming to win a second title after a 2011 success and also hold a triple crown of National Matchplay, National Strokeplay and Irish Open titles at the one time!
Murray was six down against Kildare’s Chrissie Byrne of Ryston with the former Irish No 1 looking set for another title and a first since 2015. Mary went ahead late on as well and birdied the last to ensure that she became the first Cork winner of the event since Douglas’ Norma O’Brien in the early 1990’s.
In the Ladies Nett event, Sarah O’Neill of the Collins club from Cork city won a derby affair with club-mate Patsy O’Donovan 4&3 despite O’Donovan cutting an early deficit to trail by one midway through the second round.
