Communications & Press Officer Jason O’Connor reports on some very tight Championships today on Day Two of the Provincial Strokeplay weekend.

Leinster

No Mens title for St Patricks this year but the Enniscorthy club very nearly held on to the Senior Mens title as John Ross Crangle had to come from a stroke behind the lead in the Final 18 playoff to win out by a single stroke himself in Bagenalstown. Both Ian Donnelly of Cement and Eamon Gibney of Castletown held the 36 hole lead on 12 under par but a disappointing playoff for both saw them miss out on the prizes.

Crangle nearly matched his 36 hole score of 11 under in the playoff with a fine 10 under par round in the playoff to move to a 21 under par total as Dean Grannell also had 10 under in the playoff to go with an opening 10 under to finish in second on 20 under par. His St Patricks club-mate John Hudson had six under in the playoff meanwhile to take third with 15 under par, one clear of a trio of Donnelly, McBride’s Sean Goggin and RGSC’s Junior Smith who all finished on 14 under par.

Over in Gowran at the Ladies, Ger Ward reclaimed the Senior title after becoming the only player to break 100 strokes in the three grades with a nine under par 99. Rounds of six and three under par gave her tournament total as Ryston’s Tara Dillon finished with a second 18 of three under to take second from club-mate Chrissie Byrne on four under. Chrissie had been two under par after the First Round but could only do level par in his second 18 to finish the tournament in third on two under.

The final event of a long weekend to conclude meanwhile was the Intermediate Ladies event which was won by Old County’s Pauline Balfe as she was the only player to shoot under par in the field with two under. It was her closing 18 of two under itself that gave her the score and also allowed her to finish two clear of Castletown’s Yvonne Carney. Carney had one over and one under par rounds for her 36 in finishing the grade on level par. Two four over par rounds for Rose Kelly meanwhile were enough for the formational National Senior Strokeplay Champion from Ryston to claim third with 116, one stroke ahead of Lucan’s Tracey Smith in fourth.

The Junior Ladies meanwhile saw success for the host club as Gowran’s Ina O’Donnell had a two stroke victory with a score of 123. Rounds of 60 and 63 gave her that winning score as she held off former National O-55 Junior Strokeplay winner Catherine Fox of Glenville to win the grade. Catherine shot a closing 60 to claim second with 125 as Joanne Cooney of Seapoint shot the only round in the grade under 60, 59, to finish in third on 127.

Munster

FOR the third year-in-a-row extra holes were needed to decide a Gents grade in the southern province but this year in was the Juniors as opposed to the Seniors or Intermediates as Dylan Seymour of Fermoy and Mark Cahill of Lakeside could not be separated after either 36 of 54 holes! Both players were four under par going out into the Final 18 but both shot three under in the extra round to both finish on seven under after 54 holes. Not even a nine hole playoff could separate them as they both had one under par each and after halving the 10th and 11th holes, it eventually came down to the 12th hole to decide the winner.

A par was enough for Dylan to claim the title in his first year out of U-16 level as Daire Mulvenny of Collins claimed third on two under par, five strokes clear of Lakeside’s Liam Leahy in fourth. It took a birdie on the last hole by Kieran Earls of Parteen to stop the Senior Gents going to an extra nine holes as well as he finished on 20 under par to claim his first provincial senior title, one ahead of Deerpark’s Damien Fleming who was awaiting in the clubhouse on 19 under par.

Earls had shared the 36 hole lead with Bryan Delaney on 15 under par but Fleming was the main threat in the playoff as he shot the lowest Final 18 of eight under to add to an opening 11 under par score. Earls got the birdied he needed to finish with five under for his playoff round though as a closing six under par round from Lakeside’s Mick Fennell saw him finish third on countback with a total of 18 under par to follow on from his Munster Mixed Foursomes partner Elaine Quinn’s second place finish in the Junior Ladies event the previous day.

Fennell’s six under was one shot better than Fermoy’s Declan Freeman closing five under and a closing three under for Delaney after they also finished the tournament on 18 under par.
