Cork regain Tommy Murphy Cup in Royal Meath

CORK reasserted their dominance in U-16 Pitch & Putt by regaining the Tommy Murphy Cup with a 19 shot victory over their nearest challengers in Clonee today. The Rebels pretty much led from start-to-finish as their more consistent scoring saw them win out over both Kerry and Dublin. They led the Kingdom by four shots after the Scotch Foursomes with a six under par total from Iain Aherne & Cian Murphy followed by two four under par rounds from Glenn Towler & Kieran Mills and Eoin Keating and Conor Bowdren giving them a score of 14 under par despite Kerry duo Lorcan Martin & Gerard Cronin shooting the best Scotch Foursomes round with seven under.
In the Singles Iain Aherne and Kieran Mills both brought in six under, Conor Bowdren had five under with Glenn Towler on two under and Eoin Keating on one under the other scores to count in Cork’s eventual 398 (34 under par) total. This is Cork’s third victory in the event in four years and their fourth since the turn of the decade. Both Kerry’s Jack McCarthy and Dublin’s Lennon Blake tied for the best singles score with seven under but it came to the sixth card to separate both counties when it came to determining second and third. Both counties finished on 417 (15 under par) but Gerard Cronin’s 57 was better than David Horan’s 63 in giving Kerry the silver medal. It was the Kingdom’s first medal since being runners-up in 2013 as the defending champions had to make do with bronze.
Elsewhere Meath finished fourth on 428, Westmeath were fifth on 434 with Leinster Champions Offaly finishing on 440 and Louth shooting 455.
