2016 Catalan Open Report

Darcy Wins Seniors Title in ROC 3

WHILE the overall honours might have gone to the host country, there was still a good showing for the Irish contingent at the Catalan Open in ROC 3 as Bruff’s Pacelli Darcy added another Seniors title to his international collection with a 54 hole total of seven under par. The event was won overall by Daniel Gimenez with 17 under par with Raffen Creek’s Shane Murphy finishing third overall just missing out on second on countback with a total of 15 under par alongside another Catalan Antonio Penalva. Penalva finished with a final round of five under par, one better than Murphy’s total of four under in the closing 18.

Other Irish finishers in the Top 10 included both the former and current European Strokeplay Champions. 2011 winner Ian Farrelly of Bellewstown finished with 11 under par, one ahead of his successor as European Champion Liam O’Donovan on 10 under with another Limerick player, Kieran Earls of Parteen, also finishing on the same score. Irish No 1 John Walsh and his Cork compatriot John Cahill both finished in a tie for 10th on seven under alongside Darcy. National U-16 Strokeplay Champion Ryan Towler of St Annes also had a good outing in his first full year as an adult player with a score of six under for his 54.
