The name Michael Collins is one that at worst inspires respect and at best adoration in almost all the Irish population. It is probably fitting that 90 years after his assassination Pitch & Putt returns to the popular and long established course in Cork attached to the army barracks that bears his name. The Collins Club first breathed life in 1945 at a time when with the end of World War 2 people were looking to the future with hope and expectation. They found this hope was immediately rewarded as one of their players the legendary M. J. O’Brien won the National Matchplay Championship in five of the first six years that this event was played.

Moving forward to the present day and Collins has in recent times taken giant steps forward culminating in the acquisition of the former tennis clubhouse which has been totally renovated and adapted to provide facilities to match the quality of the course. Although the course itself is relatively short many of the pitches are extremely tricky to tight well protected greens. When you get to the greens themselves there are many breaks and borrows to be negotiated before success is attained. So a word of advice to those playing over the weekend short does not equal easy.
