Pat Malone retains the Westmeath Senior Strokeplay Championship

Custume’s Pat Malone has retained the Westmeath Strokeplay Championship winning in Collinstown last Sunday. In 2013 Pat had home advantage and won the Strokeplay by beating Liam Buckley (Collinstown) in a 9 hole play off. Roll on 12 months, venue is Collinstown with all of Westmeath’s top senior players to the fore. Under some very bad wet weather the 36 hole pace was set by Liam Buckley at 17 under par. After that was Martin Kenny (Custume), Rene Bloem (Collinstown), Dessie Baker (Lough Owel), Larry McGinn all on 12 under. A further 2 shots back was defending champ Pat. Now going into the final round been 7 shots behind would phase most players, but not Pat. His attitude of never give up and anything is possible is why he is ranked one of the best players in the game. Remarkably Pat shot a final round of 10 under, deucing 8 of is first 9 holes finishing on a cumulative score of 20 under. Rene Bloem showed his talent by finishing with 6 birdies to post 20 under also. Martin Kenny came very close with a final round of 6 under to leave him on 18 under, claiming joint 3rd with John McDonnell.   Just like last year a 9 hole playoff for Pat but this time against the tough opponent in Rene. The momentum was with Pat when he went 3 under after 4 holes, with Rene level par. Pat won the playoff 9 holes by 6 shots. Congrats Pat on a truly great achievement on retaining the title of Westmeath Senior Strokeplay Champion. In the Inter grade once again Sean Langdon (Custume) showed his brilliance with a score of 15 under for 3 rounds. This type of scoring is in the Senior grade category and on any other day would easily win an Inter title, but unfortunately for Sean local may Gary Middleton scored an incredible 22 under for 3 rounds (beating the Senior grade), thus taking the Inter title. Congrats Sean on 2nd place and a fantastic performance. Well done to all Custume players that particpated. Must also mention fine performances from Anthony Browne, Davy Reddin & John Joyce who also made the final rounds in their respective grades. The Custume club would like to congratulate Collinstown club on the fine condition of the course and for their hospitality throughout the day.

Temple Street Children’s Hospital Fundraising event

Custume held this fundraiser event last Thursday. There was a huge turnout of players from current members, new players, young players and past members. Unfortunately the evening had to be cut short due to inclement weather but all players enjoyed the game they got to play and there was some great banter all around. Thanks to all who supported.

John Kelly Memorial
